Audio Interview with Ray Edwards
publish date: 09/17/2006
Brief
Overview
Ray Edwards is a Direct response copywriter who Started
his ad writing career in radio. I consider Ray to
be one of my mentors and good friends as well.
When first starting the Copywriters Institute website,
I spoke with Ray about doing audio interviews with
professional "full-time" copywriters.
One of my biggest challenges was how I could make
my voice sound "more professional" in my
recordings.
I was more than concerned...
You see, I've always had this little hang-up about
how my voice sounded, but I was still determined to
go after my dream anyway.
What Ray told me privately not only shocked me, but
also was the driving motivation in getting this entire
series of audio interviews going.
He told me that I shouldn't worry about what I sound
like and that most people don't like the sound of
their own voice.
His explanation was relatively simple, but it made
so much sense to me.
This isn't an exact quote, but (in my mind) this is
what he told me:
"Steve, when you listen to your recorded voice,
most times it sounds different than what you're accustomed
to. You see, when you speak, you are hearing your
own voice from "inside" your head, so it
it resonates differently than what other people hear...
it sound different than what you "think"
you sound like, therefore something just doesn't "feel"
right when you listen to your own voice in a recording."
He also told me that I just needed to get going and
"just do it". To stop finding excuses for
why I couldn't succeed and go forth with my project.
From the few times that I've met and spoken with Ray,
he has done more for me than he even realizes...
He's always been a great mentor in my life as a copywriter
and I know he can do the same for you as well.
The little piece of advice that Ray gave less than
a year ago not only helped me get moving in the right
direction, but it also has become one of my "mantras"
in helping others as well.
Personal
note from Steve:
My appologies in advance for the low quality on this
audio, I had just gotten my computer out of the repair
shop and somehow my settings were too "hot"
on my audio input (microphone side)...
I didn't have the heart to tell Ray of this problem
after it took us such a long to to get together to
do this interview. For better quality lower the volume
on your speakers. Thanks!

has been one of the best choices I've made since starting
my copywriting career... I know he can do the same
for yours as well.
